CARBAMAZEPINE

CARBAMAZEPINE Cytochrome P450 3A4 Inducers
Neurology Approved 1986-08-14

Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant indicated for the management of partial seizures with complex symptomatology (psychomotor, temporal lobe), generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and mixed seizure patterns. It is also indicated for the treatment of pain associated with true trigeminal neuralgia and has shown beneficial results in glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is not intended for use as a general analgesic for minor pain and does not appear to be effective in controlling absence (petit mal) seizures.

How CARBAMAZEPINE Works

While the exact mechanism of action in humans is unknown, carbamazepine exhibits anticonvulsant and analgesic properties. In animal models, it acts by reducing polysynaptic responses and blocking post-tetanic potentiation. The drug depresses thalamic potential and various bulbar and polysynaptic reflexes (such as the linguomandibular reflex) to manage seizure activity and neurological pain. Its primary metabolite, carbamazepine-10, 11-epoxide, also demonstrates anticonvulsant activity in vivo, though its

Indications & Usage

Epilepsy Carbamazepine is indicated for use as an anticonvulsant drug. Evidence supporting efficacy of carbamazepine as an anticonvulsant was derived from active drug-controlled studies that enrolled patients with the following seizure types: 1. Partial seizures with complex symptomatology (psychomotor, temporal lobe). Patients with these seizures appear to show greater improvement than those with other types. 2. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal). 3. Mixed seizure patterns which include the above, or other partial or generalized seizures. Absence seizures (petit mal) do not appear ...
