Understanding HER2

What it means: HER2 is a receptor tyrosine kinase that promotes cell growth. Overexpression or gene amplification drives aggressive cancer behavior.
Why it matters: HER2+ cancers respond to targeted therapies: trastuzumab (Herceptin), pertuzumab, T-DXd (Enhertu), and lapatinib.
Testing: IHC for protein expression (0, 1+, 2+, 3+) and FISH for gene amplification. 3+ or FISH+ is considered HER2-positive.
