Counts which company leads on each of 6 raw pipeline metrics โ total trials, Phase 1โ4, therapeutic areas. More wins = larger scale, not necessarily better outcomes.

Competitive Landscape
Competitive Overlap Matrix
Which therapeutic areas both companies are active in, and how hard each is contested.
๐ How to read this
What a row is. One therapeutic area โ Oncology, Immunology, Neurology and so on โ
where at least one of the two companies is running active trials. Areas neither company
touches never appear.
Overlap %. Shared areas divided by the areas either company is active in
(a Jaccard index). Both companies must have at least one active trial in an area
for it to count as shared โ an area listed with zero active trials is not part of a portfolio, so
it is excluded from both sides of the ratio.
Why not "what share of the smaller company's areas are shared?" Because that
measure returns 100% whenever the smaller portfolio happens to sit inside the larger one, however
small a corner of it that is. Across the top 100 sponsors, 49% of all pairs scored
exactly 100% that way. This page previously computed it both ways in different panels, and could
call the same pair "direct competition risk" in one place and "largely complementary" in another.
One definition is now used everywhere.
Contested level weighs the combined active trials in an area, so somewhere both
run substantial programmes ranks above somewhere each runs a single study.
Therapeutic areas are broad. Two companies can both be "in Oncology" while working on entirely
different tumours โ the Competitive Intelligence section below breaks the same comparison down to
individual indications, which is where genuine head-to-head competition shows up.
