DROSPIRENONE AND ESTRADIOL (drospirenone)

Yaz is a combination oral contraceptive containing drospirenone, a progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen. It is indicated for use by females of reproductive potential to prevent pregnancy and to treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Additionally, the medication is approved for the treatment of moderate acne in females at least 14 years of age who also desire an oral contraceptive for birth control.

How DROSPIRENONE AND ESTRADIOL Works

As a combination oral contraceptive, this medication works by utilizing its hormonal components to alter the reproductive cycle. The primary mechanism of action for lowering the risk of pregnancy is the suppression of ovulation. By preventing the release of an egg, the drug reduces the likelihood of fertilization.
