E-Z-DISK (barium sulfate)
E-Z-DISK is a radiographic contrast agent used to check the openness of the esophagus in adults and children 12 years and older. It helps healthcare providers evaluate esophageal patency by determining if the disk can successfully pass through the esophageal tube into the stomach. This diagnostic tool is used during imaging procedures to identify potential narrowing or obstructions in the esophagus.
How E-Z-DISK Works
Because barium has a high atomic number, it is opaque to X-rays and acts as a positive contrast agent during radiographic studies. The disk is specifically sized to pass into the stomach only when the esophageal opening is wider than 11.5 mm to 13.5 mm, allowing clinicians to visualize the physical dimensions of the passage.
