LANTHANUM CARBONATE
Lanthanum carbonate helps patients with end-stage renal disease manage high levels of phosphorus in their blood. It is used as part of a broader management plan that includes dietary changes and dialysis to lower serum phosphate levels. This medication provides a way to reduce the amount of phosphate the body absorbs from food.
How LANTHANUM CARBONATE Works
This medication works by binding to phosphate in the digestive tract to create insoluble complexes that the body cannot absorb. These complexes then pass through the gastrointestinal system and are eliminated. By preventing the absorption of dietary phosphate, the drug effectively lowers both serum phosphate and calcium phosphate levels.
