LEVO-T (levothyroxine sodium)

Oncology Approved 2002-03-01

LEVO-T (levothyroxine sodium) is a synthetic T4 hormone indicated as replacement therapy for primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism. It is also indicated for pituitary thyrotropin (TSH) suppression as an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer. **Limitations of Use:** LEVO-T is not indicated for the suppression of benign thyroid nodules or nontoxic diffuse goiter in iodine-sufficient patients, nor is it indicated for hypothyroidism during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis.

How LEVO-T Works

Levothyroxine (T4) is a synthetic form of the endogenous hormone L-thyroxine. Thyroid hormones exert their physiologic effects by diffusing into the cell nucleus and binding to thyroid receptor proteins attached to DNA, thereby regulating gene transcription and the synthesis of messenger RNA and cytoplasmic proteins. Although LEVO-T provides T4, the majority of thyroid hormone activity is mediated by triiodothyronine (T3), which is primarily derived (approximately 80%) from T4 via deiodination in peripheral tissues.
