RIFADIN (rifampin)

Trial Activity: Declining 12 active trials
Infectious Disease Approved 1971-05-21

Rifadin is a rifamycin antibacterial used for all forms of tuberculosis and for individuals in a meningococcal carrier state. It is typically prescribed as part of a multi-drug regimen to help manage the infection and prevent the emergence of resistant bacteria. This medication is used during both the initial and continuation phases of therapy, with an intravenous option available for patients unable to take oral medication.

How RIFADIN Works

Rifadin works by inhibiting DNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity within susceptible tuberculosis bacteria. It specifically targets and interacts with the bacterial RNA polymerase enzyme while leaving the mammalian version unaffected. This action prevents the bacteria from producing the RNA necessary for their survival and growth.

How We Calculate These Metrics

Trial Activity Stage

Measures the current development activity pattern based on trial phases, status, and trends. Important: This measures R&D activity, not commercial lifecycle.

Trial statuses: "Active" means recruiting or ongoing. "Completed" means reached planned endpoint. "Terminated" means stopped early—often due to safety, efficacy, or business reasons.

  • Growth: High proportion of early-phase trials (Phase 1/2), active development
  • Expansion: Significant Phase 3 activity, approaching or pursuing approvals
  • Mature: Substantial Phase 4 post-marketing studies
  • Stable: Mixed phase distribution, steady development
  • Declining: Low active trial ratio, reduced R&D investment
