ROWASA (mesalamine)
Rowasa is an aminosalicylate used for adults who have active mild to moderate distal ulcerative colitis, proctosigmoiditis, or proctitis. It helps patients manage inflammation in the lower sections of the colon and rectum. This medication is typically prescribed to address the localized symptoms associated with these specific inflammatory conditions.
How ROWASA Works
The exact mechanism of action of mesalamine is not fully understood, but it appears to exert a topical anti-inflammatory effect directly on colonic epithelial cells. It likely diminishes inflammation by inhibiting both the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, thereby reducing the mucosal production of arachidonic acid metabolites, including prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids.
