THYRO-TABS (levothyroxine sodium)
Thyro-Tabs is indicated as replacement therapy for primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism in adult and pediatric patients, including neonates. It is also used as an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer. Limitations of use: It is not indicated for the suppression of benign thyroid nodules or nontoxic diffuse goiter in iodine-sufficient patients, nor for the treatment of hypothyroidism during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis.
How THYRO-TABS Works
Thyroid hormones exert their physiologic effects by controlling DNA transcription and protein synthesis. Levothyroxine (T4) is converted in peripheral tissues to its active metabolite, triiodothyronine (T3). Both T3 and T4 diffuse into the cell nucleus and bind to thyroid receptor proteins attached to DNA; this hormone-nuclear receptor complex activates the synthesis of messenger RNA and cytoplasmic proteins. The majority of the drug's metabolic activity is mediated by T3.
