THYROGEN (thyrotropin alfa)

Oncology Approved 1998-11-30

Thyrogen is used for patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer who have previously undergone surgery to remove their thyroid gland. It helps healthcare providers monitor for cancer recurrence by assisting with blood tests for thyroglobulin and radioiodine imaging scans. This medication is also used to help destroy remaining thyroid tissue remnants through radioiodine ablation in patients who do not have evidence of cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body.

How THYROGEN Works

This drug works by binding to TSH receptors on both normal thyroid cells and well-differentiated thyroid cancer tissue. This activation stimulates the cells to take up iodine and release thyroglobulin, a protein that acts as a tumor marker in the blood. By increasing iodine uptake, the medication allows for better detection of cancer during scans or helps radioiodine effectively destroy remaining thyroid cells.
