Understanding VEGF

What it means: VEGF is a signaling protein that promotes angiogenesis (blood vessel formation). Tumors need blood supply to grow.
Why it matters: Anti-VEGF agents (bevacizumab) and VEGFR inhibitors (sorafenib, sunitinib) starve tumors by blocking angiogenesis.
Testing: VEGF is not routinely tested for patient selection. Anti-VEGF therapies are used based on tumor type, not biomarker.
