AMELUZ (aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride)

Trial Activity: Declining 1 active trials
Dermatology Approved 2016-05-10

Ameluz helps patients with mild-to-moderate actinic keratoses located on the face and scalp. This topical gel is used in combination with photodynamic therapy using a specific red light source, such as the BF-RhodoLED or RhodoLED XL lamp. It is designed to address both individual lesions and broader areas of skin affected by these growths.

How AMELUZ Works

This drug works by converting into a photoactive compound called protoporphyrin IX once it is absorbed into the skin. When this compound is exposed to specific wavelengths of red light, it reacts with oxygen to create reactive oxygen species. These molecules damage and ultimately destroy the targeted skin cells.

How We Calculate These Metrics

Trial Activity Stage

Measures the current development activity pattern based on trial phases, status, and trends. Important: This measures R&D activity, not commercial lifecycle.

Trial statuses: "Active" means recruiting or ongoing. "Completed" means reached planned endpoint. "Terminated" means stopped early—often due to safety, efficacy, or business reasons.

  • Growth: High proportion of early-phase trials (Phase 1/2), active development
  • Expansion: Significant Phase 3 activity, approaching or pursuing approvals
  • Mature: Substantial Phase 4 post-marketing studies
  • Stable: Mixed phase distribution, steady development
  • Declining: Low active trial ratio, reduced R&D investment
