ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM
Atorvastatin calcium is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina in adults with or without clinically evident coronary heart disease, including those with type 2 diabetes. It is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated LDL-C, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in adults with primary hyperlipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Additionally, it is indicated for adults and pediatric patients (10 years and older) with heterozygous or homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
How ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM Works
Atorvastatin is a selective, competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme that converts 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A to mevalonate, a precursor of sterols including cholesterol. By inhibiting hepatic cholesterol synthesis, atorvastatin triggers an upregulation of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell surface, which enhances the uptake and catabolism of LDL. This results in a reduction of circulating LDL particles and total plasma cholesterol.

How We Calculate These Metrics
Trial Activity Stage
Measures the current development activity pattern based on trial phases, status, and trends. Important: This measures R&D activity, not commercial lifecycle.
Trial statuses: "Active" means recruiting or ongoing. "Completed" means reached planned endpoint. "Terminated" means stopped early—often due to safety, efficacy, or business reasons.
- Growth: High proportion of early-phase trials (Phase 1/2), active development
- Expansion: Significant Phase 3 activity, approaching or pursuing approvals
- Mature: Substantial Phase 4 post-marketing studies
- Stable: Mixed phase distribution, steady development
- Declining: Low active trial ratio, reduced R&D investment
