AUGMENTIN ES-600 (amoxicillin)

Infectious Disease Approved 2001-06-22

AUGMENTIN ES-600 is indicated for the treatment of Acute Otitis Media.

Source: FDA Label • US ANTIBIOTICS

How AUGMENTIN ES-600 Works

Augmentin ES-600 utilizes a dual-mechanism approach. Amoxicillin binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to bacterial lysis. Clavulanate potassium acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor; it competitively and irreversibly binds to beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria (such as *H. influenzae* and *M. catarrhalis*). This protects amoxicillin from enzymatic degradation, extending its spectrum of activity to include organisms that would otherwise be resistant to amoxicillin alone.
