BISMUTH SUBCITRATE POTASSIUM, METRONIDAZOLE AND TETRACYCLINE HYDROCHLORIDE (bismuth subcitrate potassium)
Bismuth subcitrate potassium, metronidazole, and tetracycline hydrochloride is a combination antimicrobial therapy indicated for use with omeprazole to eradicate *Helicobacter pylori* in patients with active duodenal ulcer disease or a history of duodenal ulcer (within the past 5 years). Eradication of *H. pylori* has been shown to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence. To maintain effectiveness and reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria, this combination should only be used to treat infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.
How BISMUTH SUBCITRATE POTASSIUM, METRONIDAZOLE AND TETRACYCLINE HYDROCHLORIDE Works
This combination therapy exerts its effect through the synergistic actions of its three components. Metronidazole (a nitroimidazole) and tetracycline (a tetracycline-class antibiotic) act as antibacterial agents to inhibit bacterial growth and survival. Bismuth subcitrate potassium provides additional antimicrobial activity against *H. pylori* and may exert cytoprotective effects on the gastric mucosa. Together, these agents work to achieve high rates of bacterial eradication.
