CHIRHOSTIM (secretin synthetic human)

Gastrointestinal Approved 2004-04-09

ChiRhoStim is a synthetic hormone used to help clinicians diagnose issues with the pancreas and certain digestive tumors. It helps patients with suspected pancreatic exocrine dysfunction by stimulating the release of bicarbonate-rich fluids for evaluation. Additionally, it is used to help identify gastrinomas and to assist physicians in locating anatomical structures like the ampulla of Vater during endoscopic procedures.

How CHIRHOSTIM Works

This drug works by binding to secretin receptors on pancreatic duct cells, which opens CFTR channels and triggers the release of large volumes of bicarbonate-rich fluid. It mimics the action of a natural hormone usually released by the small intestine in response to acid or nutrients. The drug may also stimulate these secretions through neural pathways involving the vagus nerve.
