DUOPA (carbidopa)

DOPA Decarboxylase Inhibitors
CNS Approved 2015-01-09

DUOPA is indicated for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease.

Source: FDA Label • AbbVie • Aromatic Amino Acid Decarboxylation Inhibitor

How DUOPA Works

Levodopa is the metabolic precursor of dopamine; it crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to dopamine in the brain to alleviate Parkinson's disease symptoms. Carbidopa inhibits the decarboxylation of peripheral levodopa, preventing its conversion to dopamine in extracerebral tissues. This increases the bioavailability of unchanged levodopa for transport into the central nervous system.
