FIRAZYR (icatibant acetate)

Rare Disease Approved 2011-08-25

Firazyr treats sudden, acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults 18 years of age and older. It helps patients manage the localized swelling, inflammation, and pain that occur during these episodes. This medication is used to address the clinical symptoms that arise when the body's regulatory systems for certain proteins fail.

How FIRAZYR Works

This drug works by selectively blocking the bradykinin B2 receptor, preventing bradykinin from binding to it. In patients with hereditary angioedema, an excess of bradykinin leads to significant vasodilation and swelling. By inhibiting this interaction, the medication helps stop the inflammatory process and relieves the symptoms of an attack.
