MELAMISA (drospirenone)

Women's Health Approved 2016-01-26

Melamisa is a combination oral contraceptive containing drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol indicated for females of reproductive potential to prevent pregnancy. It is also approved to treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and moderate acne (in patients at least 14 years of age) specifically for those who choose to use an oral contraceptive for birth control. For PMDD, the drug addresses emotional and physical symptoms occurring during the luteal phase; however, its effectiveness for PMDD beyond three menstrual cycles has not been evaluated.

How MELAMISA Works

Melamisa is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing both a progestin and an estrogen component. It functions primarily by suppressing ovulation, thereby inhibiting the release of an egg and reducing the risk of pregnancy in females of reproductive potential.

CIGARETTE SMOKING AND SERIOUS CARDIOVASCULAR EVENTS Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from combination oral contraceptives (COC) use.
