PENTAM (pentamidine isethionate)

Infectious Disease Approved 1984-10-16

Pentam helps patients with HIV avoid developing Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PJP), a serious lung infection. It is used specifically for individuals at high risk, such as those who have already experienced PJP or have a CD4+ count of 200/mm³ or less. This medication is administered through a nebulizer to provide protective benefits against the fungus.

How PENTAM Works

This drug works by disrupting the nuclear metabolism of the infecting microbe. It interferes with the synthesis of essential components like DNA, RNA, proteins, and phospholipids, though the exact process is not yet fully understood. By blocking these vital functions, the medication prevents the organism from thriving.
