Abiraterone acetate is indicated in combination with prednisone for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC).
How ABIRATERONE ACETATE Works
Abiraterone acetate is a prodrug converted in vivo to abiraterone, a potent inhibitor of the CYP17 enzyme complex (17α-hydroxylase and C17,20-lyase). This enzyme is expressed in testicular, adrenal, and prostatic tumor tissues and is essential for the biosynthesis of androgens. By inhibiting CYP17, the drug blocks the conversion of pregnenolone and progesterone into testosterone precursors (DHEA and androstenedione), thereby reducing serum testosterone levels.
