CASPOFUNGIN ACETATE
Caspofungin acetate is an echinocandin antifungal indicated for use in adults and pediatric patients (3 months of age and older). It is used for empirical therapy for presumed fungal infections in febrile, neutropenic patients; the treatment of candidemia and specific Candida infections (intra-abdominal abscesses, peritonitis, and pleural space infections); the treatment of esophageal candidiasis; and the treatment of invasive aspergillosis in patients who are refractory to or intolerant of other therapies. It has not been studied for Candida-related endocarditis, osteomyelitis, or meningitis.
How CASPOFUNGIN ACETATE Works
Caspofungin is an echinocandin antifungal that inhibits the synthesis of β (1,3)-D-glucan, an essential polysaccharide component of the cell wall of many filamentous fungi and yeast, including *Aspergillus* and *Candida* species. This leads to osmotic fragility and fungal cell lysis. Mammalian cells do not contain β (1,3)-D-glucan, providing the drug with selective toxicity.
