How FURADANTIN Works
Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial agent that is reduced by bacterial flavoproteins (nitroreductases) to reactive intermediates. These intermediates attack bacterial ribosomal proteins, DNA, RNA, and other macromolecules within the cell. This multi-targeted approach inhibits protein synthesis, aerobic energy metabolism, DNA/RNA synthesis, and cell wall synthesis, making it difficult for bacteria to develop resistance.
