Heparin Sodium is an anticoagulant indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and peripheral arterial embolism. It is used to prevent postoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism in patients undergoing major surgery or those at high risk for thromboembolic disease. Additionally, it is used to manage atrial fibrillation with embolization and consumptive coagulopathies (disseminated intravascular coagulation). Clinicians also utilize it to prevent clotting during medical procedures such as dialysis, blood transfusions, extracorporeal circulation, and heart or arterial surgeries.
How HEPARIN SODIUM 1,000 UNITS AND SODIUM CHLORIDE 0.9% IN PLASTIC CONTAINER Works
Heparin interacts with the plasma protein Antithrombin III to induce a conformational change, which markedly enhances Antithrombin III's ability to inhibit activated coagulation factors, particularly Factor Xa and Thrombin (Factor IIa). Heparin also prevents the formation of stable fibrin clots by inhibiting the activation of fibrin stabilizing factor. It does not possess fibrinolytic activity and therefore will not lyse or break down existing clots.
