OSMITROL 20% IN WATER (mannitol)
Osmitrol is an osmotic diuretic used to lower pressure within the skull and treat swelling in the brain. It also helps patients with high pressure inside the eyes. This intravenous medication is typically used when fluid needs to be shifted out of these sensitive areas to reduce internal tension.
How OSMITROL 20% IN WATER Works
This medication works by increasing the osmolarity of the extracellular space and the fluid filtered by the kidneys, which prevents the reabsorption of water. This shift in concentration draws water out of the cells and into the bloodstream. This process reduces the volume of fluid in the brain and eyes, effectively lowering internal pressure.
