PLERIXAFOR

Oncology Approved 2023-07-24

Plerixafor helps patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or multiple myeloma by moving hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. It is used in combination with filgrastim to prepare these cells for collection so they can be used later in an autologous transplant. This mobilization process ensures that a sufficient number of stem cells are available in the peripheral blood for the transplantation procedure.

How PLERIXAFOR Works

Plerixafor works by blocking the CXCR4 receptor and preventing it from binding to the signaling molecule SDF-1α. Because this interaction normally helps anchor stem cells to the bone marrow matrix, inhibiting the receptor allows the cells to detach and enter the circulating blood.
