PROPOFOL
Propofol is an intravenous general anesthetic and sedative. It is indicated for the induction of general anesthesia in patients 3 years of age and older and for the maintenance of general anesthesia in patients as young as 2 months old. It is also used for Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) sedation in adults and as a sedative for adults receiving regional anesthesia. Additionally, propofol is indicated for the sedation of intubated, mechanically ventilated adult patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Use for MAC sedation or ICU sedation in pediatric patients is not recommended.
How PROPOFOL Works
The precise mechanism of action for propofol is not fully understood. However, it is thought to produce its sedative and anesthetic effects through the positive modulation of the inhibitory function of the neurotransmitter GABA via ligand-gated $GABA_A$ receptors.
