Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic indicated for the reduction of intracranial pressure, the treatment of cerebral edema, and the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure. Administered intravenously, it manages these conditions by creating an osmotic gradient that shifts fluid from the intracellular and interstitial spaces into the intravascular compartment for renal excretion.
How SORBITOL-MANNITOL IN PLASTIC CONTAINER Works
Mannitol is a small-molecule solute that remains largely confined to the extracellular space. When administered intravenously, it increases the osmolarity of the plasma, inducing the movement of intracellular water into the extracellular and vascular spaces. In the kidneys, mannitol elevates the osmolarity of the glomerular filtrate, which hinders the tubular reabsorption of water and enhances the excretion of sodium and chloride, resulting in an osmotic diuresis.
