Respiratory Approved 2005-03-11

Xopenex HFA is an inhaled medication used to manage or prevent bronchospasm in adults and children four years of age and older. How XOPENEX HFA Works

Levalbuterol acts as a functional antagonist by activating beta 2-adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle. This activation stimulates adenylate cyclase, increasing intracellular cyclic AMP levels. The rise in cyclic AMP activates protein kinase A, which inhibits the phosphorylation of myosin and lowers intracellular ionic calcium concentrations, resulting in muscle relaxation from the trachea to the terminal bronchioles. Additionally, increased cyclic AMP levels inhibit the release of mediators from mast cells in the airway, providing protection against various bronchoconstrictor challenges.
