YONSA (abiraterone acetate)

Oncology Approved 2018-05-22

YONSA helps patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer by lowering the levels of hormones that fuel tumor growth. It is used in combination with methylprednisolone for individuals whose cancer has spread and is no longer responding to standard testosterone-lowering treatments. This medication is prescribed to target androgen production in areas of the body that other therapies often miss, such as the adrenal glands and the tumor itself.

How YONSA Works

This medication works by inhibiting the CYP17 enzyme, which is required for the body to create androgens in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissues. By blocking this specific enzyme, the drug stops the conversion of precursor steroids into testosterone. This process effectively starves androgen-sensitive cancer cells of the hormones they need to survive and multiply.
