How ALDACTONE Works
Spironolactone and its active metabolites are specific pharmacologic antagonists of aldosterone, acting through competitive binding of receptors at the aldosterone-dependent sodium-potassium exchange site in the distal convoluted renal tubule. By blocking these receptors, the drug increases the excretion of sodium and water while retaining potassium. This mechanism allows the drug to function as both a diuretic and an antihypertensive agent.
