AVYCAZ (avibactam sodium)
AVYCAZ is indicated for the treatment of Complicated Intra-abdominal Infections; Complicated Urinary Tract Infections; Pyelonephritis; Hospital-acquired Bacterial Pneumonia; Ventilator-associated Bacterial Pneumonia.
How AVYCAZ Works
AVYCAZ consists of two active components: ceftazidime and avibactam. Ceftazidime is a bactericidal cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to essential penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Avibactam is a non-beta-lactam beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects ceftazidime from degradation by certain beta-lactamases, including Ambler Class A (e.g., KPC), Class C (e.g., AmpC), and some Class D (e.g., OXA-48) enzymes. This combination restores ceftazidime's activity against many resistant Gram-negative pathogens.
