ESTRADIOL AND NORETHINDRONE ACETATE (estradiol)
This combination of estradiol (estrogen) and norethindrone acetate (progestin) is indicated for women with an intact uterus for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms and moderate to severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause. It is also indicated for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women at significant risk. Clinical guidelines suggest that for symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, topical vaginal products should be considered first. Similarly, for the prevention of osteoporosis, non-estrogen medications should be considered prior to initiating this therapy.
How ESTRADIOL AND NORETHINDRONE ACETATE Works
Estradiol works by binding to nuclear receptors in estrogen-responsive tissues, replacing endogenous estrogen to alleviate vasomotor symptoms and vaginal atrophy while reducing bone resorption. Norethindrone acetate, a progestin, is included to oppose the effects of estrogen on the endometrium. By decreasing estrogen receptor levels and increasing local metabolism of estrogens in the uterus, the progestin component reduces the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma that would otherwise be associated with unopposed estrogen therapy in women with a uterus.
