OLMESARTAN MEDOXOMIL AND HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (hydrochlorothiazide)

Trial Activity: Declining
Cardiovascular Approved 2016-10-26

This combination medication treats high blood pressure in patients who require more than one drug to reach their health goals. By lowering blood pressure, it helps reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks. It is typically used as a follow-up therapy rather than a first-line treatment for hypertension.

How OLMESARTAN MEDOXOMIL AND HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE Works

This drug works by combining two different actions: olmesartan blocks the binding of angiotensin II to receptors in the blood vessels to prevent vasoconstriction, while hydrochlorothiazide acts as a diuretic to increase the excretion of sodium and water. Together, these actions reduce plasma volume and relax blood vessels to lower blood pressure. The olmesartan component also helps counteract the potassium loss often caused by the diuretic.

How We Calculate These Metrics

Trial Activity Stage

Measures the current development activity pattern based on trial phases, status, and trends. Important: This measures R&D activity, not commercial lifecycle.

Trial statuses: "Active" means recruiting or ongoing. "Completed" means reached planned endpoint. "Terminated" means stopped early—often due to safety, efficacy, or business reasons.

  • Growth: High proportion of early-phase trials (Phase 1/2), active development
  • Expansion: Significant Phase 3 activity, approaching or pursuing approvals
  • Mature: Substantial Phase 4 post-marketing studies
  • Stable: Mixed phase distribution, steady development
  • Declining: Low active trial ratio, reduced R&D investment
