How VALSARTAN AND HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE Works
This combination product employs two distinct mechanisms to lower blood pressure. Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor. This inhibits the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of the renin-angiotensin system without affecting the response to bradykinin. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that affects the renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption, directly increasing the excretion of sodium and chloride. Together, these actions reduce peripheral vascular resistance and extracellular fluid volume, thereby decreasing the workload on the heart and lowering systemic blood pressure.
