Ephedrine sulfate is a sympathomimetic amine that exerts its effects through a dual mechanism of action. It acts as a direct agonist at alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors and indirectly stimulates the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic neurons. These combined actions result in increased arterial pressure, cardiac output, and peripheral resistance, effectively reversing hypotension.
